Explore the Foundations of Chinese This Summer!

  • Unlock the rich and fascinating world of the Chinese language with our immersive summer course.

    Designed for beginners and young learners, this course will teach students how to read, write, and speak Chinese through engaging short stories and interactive activities. By the end of the week, students will have a solid foundation in Chinese language and culture, ready to use their new skills in everyday conversations.

    Course Overview:

    Our program focuses on four key components: speaking, listening, writing, and cultural knowledge. Each day, students will delve into these areas through fun and educational activities, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

    🧧Day 1: Introduction and 乌鸦喝水 Video Analysis

    • Kick off the course with an introduction to Chinese and a fun video analysis of the story "The Crow and the Pitcher."
    • Engage with vocabulary and practice listening and speaking skills.

    🧧Day 2: 日常生活用语和情绪 (Daily Life Vocabulary and Emotions)

    • Learn essential vocabulary and phrases for daily life and emotions.
    • Focus on understanding and note-taking to enhance comprehension and retention.

    🧧Day 3: 三只小猪 (The Three Little Pigs)

    • Read and annotate the classic story of "The Three Little Pigs."
    • Translate and review vocabulary to reinforce learning.

    🧧Day 4: 交通工具与运动 (Transportation and Sports)

    • Understand and use vocabulary related to transportation and sports.
    • Practice translating vocabulary to English and constructing sentences.
    • Engage in conversational practice using new vocabulary.

    🧧Day 5: 守株待兔 (The Farmer and the Hare)

    • Read and annotate the idiom story "The Farmer and the Hare."
    • Participate in story translation and vocabulary review.

    Throughout the week, students will complete worksheets, engage in presentations, watch videos, and enjoy movies to keep the learning experience dynamic and enjoyable.

    Meet Your Instructor:

    Yolanda Cheung is a rising junior at Livingston High School and a Chinese tutor at Teaching4Charity. Born in Hong Kong, she moved to Livingston in 7th grade. While Cantonese is her first language, she learned Mandarin through classes and Chinese dramas after moving to America. Yolanda excelled in the AP Chinese exam, scoring a 5 as a freshman. With a passion for Chinese language and culture, she is eager to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with young learners.

    Course Details:

    • Location: In-person at Living Stone Christian Church
    • Who Can Join: Recommended for grades 3-5 or beginners at Chinese. Some Chinese foundation will be beneficial for students.
    • Session Dates: July 15 - July 19
    • Times: 4 PM - 6 PM
